Few plants tolerate cold, drought, and other adverse conditions better than the Juniper. Extremely tolerant of drought once established its no wonder these are one of few plants you'll find growing naturally in regions of the badlands. There are many varieties of juniper to choose from and we carry several that can be found below. Pay attention to their mature size when selecting them for a certain purpose.

A compact form of the Andorra juniper with light green foliage in summer, that turns a plum color in fall and winter. Excellent, low growing evergreen.

This silvery-blue, low growing, spreading juniper is very popular where it is known. Similar to Andorra Compact in height and adds color to the landscape.

Prince of Wales Juniper
Juniperus horizontalis 'Prince of Wales'
Low-growing, forming a dense mat 4 - 6 inches high. Medium, bright green color. During late fall and winter the exposed leaves are purple tinged. Very hardy. Found in 1931 in the Pedkisco Creek area of Alberta, Canada, near the Morden Research Station and introduced by them in 1967

Juniperus scopulorum 'Medora'
***A LOCAL FAVORITE***
A selection from the Badlands of North Dakota. A slender-shaped variety with a blue-green color. Needs little shearing to produce a narrow specimen. Slow growing. An excellent columnar blue juniper, hardy and acclimated for the northern prairie states of the U.S. and the prairie provinces of Canada.

Eastern red cedar
Juniperus virginiana
The Eastern red-cedar is a small tree, native to North America. These cold-hardy, adaptable evergreen trees serve many purposes in the landscape, especially in sites that are dry, alkaline or windy. The foliage of scale-like needles is attractive but prickly. In late summer and fall, many junipers have blue-green berry-like fruits, actually modified cones, that attract birds. Because they are quite salt-tolerant, they can be used near roads, driveways, and sidewalks. Eastern red cedar is usually a tree, but there are shrub-sized cultivars available.
